I want to share a tradition with you.

On the last day of the year, I like to spend some time remembering what happened.  Not glossing over the details, but really breaking it down, month by month – highs and lows.  The best is to do this out loud with someone you love while drinking.  And you have to be honest — it’s not the Christmas letter airbrushed version of your life that counts.  It’s the real one.

When you mine the details of your year – the events that mattered, the changes, the disappointments and the good times —  it seems richer, fuller and less fleeting.  It slows down time.  I like that.

This New Year’s Eve, I’m planning to do the year in review with Dave during a long cab ride to a party.  Once we get to the party, I’ll be too busy suppressing yawns, checking for texts from the babysitter and wishing I was in my PJ’s to give 2013 its proper due.  (I kid, I kid.  Sort of.)

Regardless of how successfully I rally on a Tuesday night, I know I’ll be feeling very grateful for family and friends, especially all of you reading my blog, which brings me more pleasure than you can imagine (unless you’re also a blogger).

I’m not much of a resolution girl.  (You know that expression, “Man plans, God laughs”?   I can hear the giggling already.) But I know that in 2014 I will have a lot to share with you, especially since I’m getting married in July and will finally unlock the secret of what happens AFTER carriage and marriage.  I hope there is a password and handshake.

You keep reading, and I’ll keep writing. Be safe out there.  Happy New Year.
